Signs Your Water Heater Is About to Fail (And What to Do in St. Louis)

Your water heater works quietly in the background every day, heating water for showers, dishes, and laundry without much fanfare. That is, until it stops working. For most St. Louis homeowners, a failed water heater comes as a surprise. But in most cases, the warning signs were there for weeks or even months beforehand.

Knowing what to look for can save you from a cold shower, water damage, or a full emergency replacement on a Sunday evening. Here are the most common signs that your water heater is on its way out and what to do about it.

1. Your Water Heater Is More Than 10 Years Old

Most traditional tank water heaters last between 8 and 12 years. If yours is approaching or past that range, it’s worth paying attention even if it hasn’t given you obvious trouble yet. Older units are less energy-efficient, more prone to leaks, and can fail without much warning.

You can find the age of your unit by checking the serial number on the label. The first few characters typically encode the manufacture date. If you’re not sure how to read it, your plumber can tell you quickly.

2. You’re Running Out of Hot Water Faster Than Usual

If your showers are getting shorter because the hot water runs out more quickly than it used to, that’s a red flag. This is often caused by sediment buildup inside the tank, a common issue in St. Louis and St. Charles County, where hard water is the norm.

Over time, minerals from the water settle at the bottom of the tank and reduce its effective capacity. In some cases, flushing the tank can help. But if the unit is older, the sediment buildup may be a sign it’s time to replace rather than repair.

3. Strange Noises Coming from the Tank

A healthy water heater runs quietly. If you start hearing rumbling, popping, or banging sounds, especially when the unit is heating, that’s usually sediment at the bottom of the tank hardening and getting agitated by the heating element.

These sounds aren’t just annoying. They mean your unit is working harder than it should, which shortens its lifespan and drives up your energy bill.

4. Rusty or Discolored Hot Water

If your hot water looks brownish or has a metallic smell, the inside of your tank may be corroding. This is a serious sign. Once corrosion sets in, the tank can begin to leak, and there’s no repairing a corroded tank. Replacement is the only real fix.

One way to check: run hot water at a faucet and fill a few glasses. If the discoloration is consistent across all of them and only present with hot water, the tank is likely the culprit.

5. Visible Leaks or Moisture Around the Unit

Any water pooling around the base of your water heater, even small amounts, should be taken seriously. Leaks often start small and get worse. They can stem from a failing pressure relief valve, a corroded tank, or loose fittings.

If you notice moisture, don’t wait. A leaking water heater left unaddressed can cause significant water damage to your home.

6. Your Energy Bills Are Climbing

Water heaters account for a significant portion of home energy use. If you’ve noticed your gas or electric bills creeping up and nothing else has changed, an inefficient or failing water heater could be the reason. As units age, they lose efficiency, working harder to deliver the same amount of hot water.

What to Do If You Notice These Signs

If one or more of these warning signs sounds familiar, here’s a simple path forward:

  • Don’t ignore it. Small problems become expensive emergencies quickly.
  • Get a professional assessment. A licensed plumber can tell you quickly whether repair or replacement makes more sense given the age and condition of your unit.
  • Consider a tankless upgrade. Many St. Louis homeowners are switching to tankless water heaters for the energy savings, endless hot water, and longer lifespan (20+ years for well-maintained units).
  • Act before it fails completely. Replacing a water heater on your schedule is far less stressful, and usually less expensive, than an emergency replacement.
